Witchy Reads: Books to Spark Your Magical Journey
As the air starts to cool (oh please, oh please) and witching season arrives, I always find myself drawn to stories of magic, sisterhood, and transformation. This year, I kicked off the season with The Once and Future Witches, and it was so good that I flew through it in record time. Here’s a list of my favorite witchy reads—whether you're a fan of historical fiction, fantasy, or even non-fiction, these books will surely light the fire under your cauldron.
1. The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
This book caught my eye solely because of its title, and it did not disappoint. Set against the backdrop of the women's suffrage movement, it’s a powerful story about spells, sisterhood, and the right to embrace who you truly are. Given the current political climate, this felt especially timely, as we just passed the 104th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, empowering read, this is it. It’s perfect for fans of historical fantasy and a must-read for anyone who loves stories about women rising up.
2. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
This one’s a classic that I return to again and again. If you think you know the story of King Arthur, think again—The Mists of Avalon retells the legend from the perspective of Morgaine (also known as Morgan le Fay). The book is epic in length and scope, but I’ve devoured it three times now, especially staying up all night for certain spicy parts. It’s a gorgeous exploration of magic and power through a woman’s lens, and if you’re into long, immersive reads, you’ll love this entire series of eight books.
3. The Tidelands Series by Philippa Gregory
You might know Philippa Gregory for her historical novels like The Other Boleyn Girl or The White Queen, but her Tidelands series (or the Fairmile series, as she calls it) brings a magical element into her historical fiction. This series begins in 1685 and takes you on a journey through the witchy side of history. The series currently includes Tidelands, Dark Waters, and Dawnlands, and is perfect for those who enjoy stories about women navigating power and magic in a historical context.
4. Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
While many of us love watching Practical Magic every Halloween (Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, anyone?), the books offer even more depth, especially The Rules of Magic, which takes us back to the 1960s and 70s to explore the aunts’ backstory (and surprise, they had a brother!). If you want to dive even deeper, check out Magic Lessons, which goes all the way back to the original Owens family curse in the 1600s. These books are rich with family lore and magic that will captivate you from the first page.
5. The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
If fantasy is more your thing, The Wheel of Time is an epic series that you simply can’t miss. The Aes Sedai—powerful women who wield magic—are essential to the story, and their intricate politics and ancient power struggles make them endlessly fascinating. I haven’t finished all 14 books yet (I’m about halfway through), but it’s on my bucket list! Bonus: There are two seasons of The Wheel of Time on Prime, and I’m already dreaming of the day we do an Aes Sedai-themed Those Witches Be Crazy event just to see all the amazing costumes.
6. Circe by Madeline Miller
Circe is often considered the first witch in mythology, and this retelling of her story is nothing short of magical. Set against the backdrop of Greek mythology, Circe is a beautifully written, award-winning novel about power, independence, and transformation. It’s a captivating read that will transport you to a world where gods and mortals collide.
7. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
The Discovery of Witches brings together witches, vampires, and daemons in an academic, historical-fantasy mashup. While I enjoyed it enough to finish on a long flight, I didn’t feel compelled to dive into the rest of the series. However, for those who love a bit of saucy supernatural romance, it’s a fun and adventurous read—plus, there’s a TV adaptation starring Matthew Goode (who definitely has my attention).
8. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice
Anne Rice never disappoints with her vivid, gothic storytelling. The Witching Hour is the first book in her Lives of the Mayfair Witches series, and, like all of her works, it's hauntingly atmospheric. Whether you’re familiar with her Vampire Chronicles or not, Rice knows how to weave magic, intrigue, and deep family secrets into unforgettable stories. Bonus: There’s now a Mayfair Witches series on AMC if you want to watch it after you read!
9. Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Stardust is a timeless, adult fairy tale, and Neil Gaiman’s storytelling never fails to enchant. The magic in this story feels whimsical yet profound. It’s one of the first books I read by Gaiman, and it remains one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen the movie adaptation, do yourself a favor—Michelle Pfeiffer, as a witch, is everything you need. Robert DeNiro is enchanting and unlike you’ve ever seen him before!
10. The Witch’s Daughter by Paula Brackston
This book and its sequel, The Return of the Witch, are beautifully written and filled with enchanting details. While it’s not at the top of my list, it’s definitely worth mentioning for those who love character-driven magical stories with historical elements.
Non-Fiction Witchy Reads
Now for the non-fiction lovers, these are the two books I absolutely recommend if you’re diving into the witchy side of things:
1. Waking the Witch: Reflections on Women, Magic, and Power by Pam Grossman
This book is an essential read for anyone who wants to explore the intersection of witchcraft, feminism, and modern-day magic. Grossman blends history, pop culture, and personal reflection in a way that’s smart, funny, and incredibly engaging. I’ve read this book multiple times and have listened to it on Audible—I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who’s witch-curious.
2. Heal the Witch Wound: Reclaim Your Magic and Step Into Your Power by Celeste Larsen
If you consider yourself a healer, coach, or spiritualist, Heal the Witch Wound is a powerful read that delves deep into the generational trauma of the witch hunts and how it continues to impact us today. It’s a guide for reclaiming your power and embracing your magical gifts, especially if you work in a space that requires healing others.
Whether you’re looking for fiction to sweep you away into a world of spells and sisterhood or non-fiction that helps you reconnect with your inner magic, these witchy reads are sure to ignite your passion for all things mystical this season. Happy reading, and may your fall be filled with magic! ✨📚
